You were dominant against McHale at the Aussie Open for the first set and a half but couldn't quite close it out. Did the heat effect you? I noticed McHale was using an ice pack between games but you were not. Was that through choice or did you not have one available?

Hi Brett
I do not think the heat was a factor for me not closing out the match. I was aware that there were ice packs but I did not feel the need to use them.

Hi Marina
Long time listener first time caller. Congratulations on a fantastic year! It has been great following your results!
I was wondering what achievement you are most proud of this year? Beating Vika Azarenka at Stanford, Wimbledon doubles semis with Tammy Tanasugarn or your first WTA singles final in Quebec?
thanks

Hi Paddy
If I really had to chose between those three I would pick the semis at Wimbledon. I just love that grand slam and it was a really great feeling making it all the way to the final Saturday of the event.

Hi Marina,
For a school project, I'm looking at you. I have a few questions to ask you.
- When do you train and for how long?
- What is your favourite tennis memory?
- Who is your coach?
Thanks, Josephine

Hi Josephine
If I am doing a training block for one to two weeks then I am playing tennis in the morning and afternoon. All together I would be on the court for 3-4 hours.
My favourite tennis memory would be hitting against a wall when I was little. That was how I started tennis.
My coach is Christian Zahalka.

Hi Sam
It gets pretty hard sometimes to maintain friendships and especially to build new ones when you are way from home for so long. I do my best, there is always email, facebook and skype so I try to stay in touch as much as I can.
Favourite song at the moment is Pumped up kicks by Foster the People.
Favourite song of all time? That is too tough, there are so many good ones I cannot pick just one.

Congratulations for beating the highest ranking player you have ever beaten in Victoria Azarenka today at number 4 in the world! Your dream of being no.1 looks a lot more possible now! I'm really impressed at how you've picked up in the last 6 months. - including not seemingly getting over nervous in the third set against Victoria - is confidence and match play the key to your success or have you really improved another aspect of your game?
I've enjoyed watching you on tele in the past few months and it looks like now you'll be playing WTA for the rest of the year - so well done! That's a tremendous result considering where you were back in January! Go for it!

Hi Stuart
I think confidence comes with the match play, however you also have to be winning some of those matches to get going.
This question is a tough one and I do not think there is a straightforward answer. I think it is a combination of a lot of hard work and always trying to improve your game and yourself.

Hi Pita
I recommend seeing what comes natural to the kid and then going with that. Most commonly if it is a boy and he has a natural one hander I would stick with that. If it is a girl and her two handed is better I would go with that.

Hi Sophie
I am not too sure what I would say my greatest achievement is. However if I have to single one thing out it would be breaking into the top 50 of the world ranking in both singles and doubles.
My inspiration was probably watching all the great players on television as a kid, like Monica Seles and Pete Sampras.

Hey Marina!
Congradulations on how well your going at Wimbledon!
I'm doing a year 10 PE assignment on an influencial New Zealander (You!) Here's a couple of questions i've found diffucult to answer:
When did you decide you wanted to take your tennis further?
Were you born with a natural Tennis ability or did you have to learn the works?
Where did you originally train and who are your current and previous coaches?
If you could grab a sec in your busy schedule to answer those that would be awesome!
Good Luck for the rest of your tennis season!
Much love.

Hi Dominique
I decided to play professional tennis when I finished high school.
I think I was born with some natural talent but I definitely had to learn the game and work hard so I think it is a combination of both.
Growing up I trained in Auckland. My first coach was my Dad, followed by Chris Lewis and then Michiel Schapers. Currently my coach is Christian Zahalka.

Hi Olivia

Yes there is such a thing as too much training. Injuries can occur if you over train so it is very important to listen to your body and take care of your self.

Hello again!
Congrats on all your wins - so exciting to follow!
I was just wondering how come it is after your win in Pelham your ranking went down one? Surely not everyone around you also did amazing? Or was it losing points from a tourney last year, because I thought you were injured around then?
Secondly my younger sister keeps reminding me that I must say that she named a frog after you!
Keep up the fab playing. Oh, and one more question. I've been playing InterClub this year and I was wondering how you focus in a game and tune everything else out? And how you keep positive when you are losing?
Thanks heaps!

Hi Georgia
The ranking does not come into account until the a week later so that is why you probably saw that.
Please tell your sister that I am honored she named the frog after me.
Well I focus by trying always to see what my opponent is doing. For example where they are placing there shots. I try to focus on the ball as well and I also try to relax and breathe right as much as I can.
I stay positive by fighting for every point and keeping my body language positive
I hope this helps. Thanks for your support.

Can you tell me what has changed in your game to make such a dramatic change in this past month - even beconming a clay court champion? It's really fantastic that the corner has been turned and up is the way you're going. By the way have you thought of using Twitter to keep us in touch with what you're up to during a tournament? Hi Stuart
Thank you.
What has changed?
I think just playing a lot more matches. I have had some very close ones over the past couple of months and I think pulling through those has helped me gain confidence. Winning on the clay last week is a very good step for me as I do not play on it often and it is a surface you really need to work hard on.
No I have not thought of using twitter. There are quite a few networking tools in my life at the moment so one more will be a little too much. But I will keep that option in mind.

Hi Marina
Great result in England on Monday. I hope you win your next round match. Also I hope you do as well against the world number 1 doubles peering in England .Will you have to qualify for Wimbledon or will your injury ranking get you into the main draw. I was wondering how I should increase my pace of my serve and consistently get it in, and for my passing shots should try using more speed or just focusing on getting it wide of my opponent and getting it in.
Good Luck
|
|

A:

Hi William
For Wimbledon this year I had to play qualifying (the protected ranking I have allows me only one Grand Slam entry and I already used the for Australia). I did not get through in the singles but I did in the doubles so I will play next week.
Regarding your questions. On your serve to get speed you want to use your legs, bend your knees and spring. The other thing you have to do is produce good racquet speed with your arm and us your wrist at the end. If you want to get it in however you have to give the ball more spin. Everything else stays the same just put a bit more work on the ball.
With passing shots, you have to see where your opponent is on the court. Percentage wise it is good to pass down the line, however if you can make your opponent play one more shot that is better than going for a lot of pace and missing.
Hope that helps

hey marina
im doing a project on a person who has influenced me and i chose you!
a few questions i found hard to find. It would really help me if you could answer them if you have time. thanx.
-what challenges did you overcome to achieve your goals? and what were your goals in life?
- what are your human qualities and how did they help you become top in tennis?
- what other sports did you play earlier on?
-did you ever think of quiting tennis when it got tough?
- What sacrifices did you have to make to play tennis and have they affected others?
thanx sooo much if you get a chance to answer these. i play tennis myself but i have only won little things like the coco cola tour and asb. Hope to hear form you soon!! and good luck for all your tennis.xx

Hi Madison
Here is the answer to your first couple of questions.
What challenges did you overcome to achieve your goals? And what were your goals in life?
Well there have been a lot of challenges for me thus far in my career. It really started from early days when I had to miss out on time at school, time with friends, time to do things an average kid would do. I was away from home a lot, so missing my family and friends and the social aspect was hard to deal with when I was younger. Finding the financial funds for my travels and expenses (early on my parents carried a lot of this load) was another major challenge. Similar sacrifices occur today for me as well but I think I am older and more knowledgeable now to deal with it much better.
My goal as a little girl was and still is to be number 1 in the world. Some grand slam wins along the way would be great too, with Wimbledon being right up there for me. But that is long term, I always had little goals and still do as I go along. For example winning a national title when I was a 14, being a top 10 juniors or nowadays when I am training beating an old running time of mine on a particular course or doing more chin ups then I did the previous day. So all these little things eventually turn into the bigger picture.
Sorry that is all I have time to answer now, I will try to answer the rest of your questions as soon as I can.

Hi Marina, It's obviously taking a bit longer than you expected getting back to where you were in singles, but I'm really pleased that you're almost invincible in doubles at the moment. Are you considering taking the opportunity to use your Top-100 doubles ranking in WTA doubles events during the middle of the year, and making some decent money to keep paying your expenses, or are you focusing on singles with doubles as a bonus and hoping things will improve once you hit the grass court and hard court seasons from June onwards? What ever you choose, I'll be watching for your results and draws and hope things will go well for you - especially on the grass courts which appear to be your best surface - hope you get a chance to win the Surbiton title again! All the best from Glendowie NZ!

Hi Stuart
Doubles is definitely a game I enjoy playing. My main focus is always singles, but doubles on the side helps me improve my game and also helps me out financially.
I will use my protected doubles ranking later on in the year to play some WTA events, I have just not decided exactly when or where.
I hope that answered your question. Thank you for following and it is great to hear from someone out of Glendowie.

Is it because it is not high enough or you have to use all of your protected ranking wildcard's first ?

Hi Hollie
The ranking of 227 would not get me into the qualifying of the lead up tournaments, and I do not want to use my protected ranking for those either (as I would be in qualifying as well), so I will go straight to Melbourne to play the Open.
Thanks for the support

Hi Stanza
I do not feel I have just one great achievement in my tennis career thus far. I have had a very good junior career, winning some big events in singles and doubles. Playing on the WTA tour and at the grand slams is another level however, and there have been some great moments there too and I hope many more to come.
I am still a little unsure about my schedule after the Aussie Open but I will post it up as soon as I can.
Thanks for the support

Hey Marina :) Since you have not be playing much on the WTA tour this year do you think your match play has gotten worse or do you think being at the acadamy in Spain has made you improve and play a different style? Sorrie don't mean to sound blunt =]

Hi Hollie
I think my time at the Academy in Spain has helped me improve a lot of my game, it has definitely made me fitter and stronger. The time there has not necessarily changed my game or my playing style.
After a long time out of competition it is tough to gain back the mental edge or "match play" straight away. And I wish you can get it back quick by training (for example at the academy) but you really have to play the tournaments for that sort of improvement. So that is what I am starting to do now. An injury does not make you a mentally weak athlete, if anything it makes you stronger, however it just takes a bit of time to groove into those match situations again.
Thanks for your question.
Best Wishes
Marina

Hey marina!! Firstly great to see you back man it's been a long wait but it'l be good in the long run. Do you have any goals for 2010? I think it would be cool if you played in every Grand slam this year to get back into the swing of things. p.s maby you could make a video column for your website, it woluld be awesome to see some of your matches :) ecspecially the one against Vera Zvonareva ;) GO KIWI GO

Hi Stanza
Thanks for your question.
Playing in all the four grand slams is definitely a goal for next year, getting inside the top 100 and top 50 are another couple, and staying healthy I think is the most important one.
I would love to put some videos up but unfortunately my site does not have that capability just yet.
Thanks for your support and I hope you have a great summer.
Best Wishes
Marina

Hi Hollie
I think you are pretty correct there, I do have a good serve and do like to come into the net and put some volley's away.
I would like to improve on everything really, especially on court coverage, my groundies and the consistency of my serve.
Thank you for your question

Hi Jemma
Good to hear from a fellow Geldowie student. I remember when they were just thinking about building the gymnasium, I am glad it has all gone ahead.
Thank you very much for doing that, it would be a little weird if it did happen (I would probably tape a moustache and put mickey mouse ears on myself). But it would be an honour as well.
Hope you enjoy your holidays.
All the best
Marina

Hi Marianna
My current ranking is 232. My protected ranking ( due to my injury) which I will start to use at the beginning of next year will be around the 80 mark.
Yes I like the croatian culture very much, especially the food, dancing and the many jokes I so often hear. I do consider myself more of a Kiwi however, as I moved to NZ when I was very little and I basically started school here.
Hope that answers your questions
Best

Q:

Hey there Marina
I see you have a tendency to play indoors before hitting the ASB Classic in Auckland. Any particular reason you are using indoor tournaments? IS it because they are ITF and they're all indoor or something?
You should celebrate a match with a heel click one time!

Hi There
The reason I am playing indoors is because it is winter time here in Europe and it would be too cold to play out doors. Plus it also rains a lot now, especially in Germany. The temperature this morning here in Ismaning was 2 degrees.
ITF tournaments are just the same as the WTA's in the sense that they are played on various surfaces and are played indoors and out.
Thanks for your question

Hi William
Yes I will be playing in Auckland and Australia.
Regarding your serve you have to be a bit more specific with me, what exactly is going wrong? Are you serving in the net or out for example.
I do not think I will be playing in Wellington. Thanks for your questions.
Catch you again soon
