4 January 2012 Start of a New YearMarina's home time in Auckland has nearly come to an end. The Kiwi started her 2012 season against Germany's Angelique Kerber last night in the 1st round of the ASB Classic. It was a hard fought battle however the no. 32 ranked German came out on top in the end with a scoreline of 64 46 64.
Marina who is looking fitter and stronger this year was on top trhoughout most of the match, however as tennis plays out sometimes she had her chances but just wasn't able to capitalize. Here is what she had to say after the match:
"It was very close. I felt I played decently throughout the match but just let a few points slip here and there. Angelique was just too steady today but I feel as though I have improved quite a bit from last year and I will continue to work hard and improve as much as I can."
The Kiwi heads over to Australia to play in Hobart starting this Sunday, the same WTA tier level tournament as Auckland. After this she will compete in the first grand slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open in Melbourne.
